about

‘Cross That Line’
This was quite exciting. I wanted to write a song like ‘Smokestack Lightning’ or ‘Spoonful’. Very riff dominated and very basic. I pulled the riff out of my everlovin’ Cromwell and started playing it both live and in my head on rotation. Gradually the melody came and words started to insert themselves. The song is kind of a basic dramatization of what my wife and I call ‘Date Night’ every Friday night, especially during the lockdown is considered to date night.
Whether we went out or stayed in, especially during the lockdown, we’d make an effort to look ‘presentable’ and get a takeaway dinner, wine, and chill in front of a movie. She was looking particularly good one night...

I recorded three guitar parts, two picking, and one slide, to a click track and emailed it to Robbo. He recorded his drums at home and sent them back to me and I then did a quick bounce off them and sent that to Pete Mav. He gave me two double bass passes and suggested I use the one I like best. I comped them and used them both.
Having done that, I sent yet another bounce to Bruce and he gave me a couple of piano passes. I picked what I liked best and built them into the song. Then I overdubbed some percussion, overdubbed my vocal and that was that.
