about

‘Joshua Tree’
This was one of the songs that I did alone in my studio during the lockdown. Originally I had imagined a pipe band on it but not having one laying about I took it in a different direction, and ultimately a more befitting one.

This is an accidental Xmas song. I conceived it during a stay at the famous Joshua Tree Inn in early 2019. Joey and I, along with the rest of the inhabitants of Joshua Tree, were given something of a gift by way of a heavy snowfall over night that continued on through the day. It is a rare occurrence and a very beautiful and surreal one at that.
I found the main riff while drinking mulled wine and sitting alongside Gram Parson’s shrine at the Joshua Tree Inn.
The lyrics tell the story so no point in me saying much more than that.

I had figured that a rhythm guitar and a bit of lead would do it but the song insisted on more. The riff became a perpetual canon for starters. Each pass of the song hinted that something else was needed. I could hear a mandolin, but not having one, put the capo way up the neck of my 12 string and imitated one. When I heard a deliberate harmonic on one of the guitars it made me think of triangles, so I added one. Then tambourine and a kick drum but still there was something missing.
I kept thinking “it‘s not Christmassy enough...”, so in a flash of inspiration I added the ‘reindeer’ bells. Perfect! Once I had it all down and listening to it play back a harmony popped into my head. I was rather tired of my own voice by this stage so I asked Joey if she’d sing it with me. That’s was the finishing touch.
