‘Old Ben Putty’
A one-chord wonder! So intense. It just steamrollers along. I got the riff out of my resonator and it really set the tone of the song. It is a somewhat fictionalized story about my son, Ben. I used to make leadlight windows, a business run by two very dear friends of mine, and he had the job of puttying them. He’d come in, covered in this white powder used to scrub them (the puttied windows) looking like an ancient. We’d tease him about it and call him Old Ben Putty, like a pirate character.

Also, my son used to have a coffee shop down the bottom of King St, in Newtown, and the building got sold and it all went to hell. All that work for nothing. I took it a lot further with my imaginings adding classic blues tropes as a sort of ‘tribute’ to the blues. The basic tracks lay down at the Brunswick studio. We nailed it on the third take. I added the rhythm guitar at home and the horns went down in my home studio with the rest of the tunes they played on. We overdubbed them to get them as fat as we could. It blew me away. This song is so wired...!
