‘The Bompa-a-Bomp Song’
It sprung out of my resonator guitar. I was messing around in open G, looking for something when the basic riff just kind of coalesced. For me, a riff defines or dictates the melody and once you have a melody, words tend to follow.
The blues is the perfect vehicle for songs that sum up a relationship gone wrong. Nothing new there, but that particular one was quite a blow. The arrangement was very organic and this was the third take in the studio. I wanted it to be relaxed and easy and that’s what I got.
You can hear the ‘ghost’ vocals that spilled into the drum microphones.
The harmonica parts, by Dave Hogan, were overdubbed and recorded by me at my home studio during a break in the lockdowns.
Originally I had slide guitar in mind but decided to play it straight while I was listening back during the vocal overdub sessions. Like all the songs, it was based on a real-life incident that happened many, many years ago...
