about

‘This Mother’s Son’
I wrote this song in my head while walking back from the supermarket one day. I had been watching reruns of Hee Haw and there was a recurring comedy number that popped up in a lot of episodes and it had become a bit of an earworm for me. I think I wrote this in order to get the other out of my head. This was during the height of Melbourne’s mind-numbing (and hopefully) final lockdown. Even as I was pulling it all together in my mind I had the three-part harmony going strong. I lay down the rhythm track first, using my 1938 Cromwell Archtop, and the added lead vocal and harmonies. Then while listening back to a pass on the slide guitar I started fooling around on my resonator with a lead and liked it. I reset, hit record, and caught it in one take. I record all the guitars and vocals using my favorite mic, the Big Head. My wife bought it for me as a birthday gift and it is just terrific. The song, once again was me looking back at my very first full-on relationship bust-up. I found a few lines here and there in bold notebooks and managed to work them into the song. The whole thing was recorded in my home studio with me as engineer.
